Again and again, I am amazed how powerful and effective it is to GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD….
I hear this from clients all the time. When people have to get right to the heart of their issue in just a sentence or two, without drowning in details, that's when the insights really start to flow. It's like focusing on the essence brings everything into perspective.
What starts to happen is you become aware of:
- unresolved issues among competing strategies.
- gaps in the information needed for making decisions,
- clash between what we silently hope for versus what we openly ask for
- plus, a whole lot more starts to come to light.
Anything and everything that stands between you and your way forward comes forth.
If you are facing any sort of challenge that you can't really grasp, do this:
Imagine you are talking about this to a very expensive consultant who charges per hour, and you wouldn’t want to waste a minute.
Formulate your challenge out loud aiming to outline the whole depth in a concise manner without losing the very essence. Then write it down.
What is at the very core of your issue?
What parties are involved?
What are the relationships and interconnections between objects and subjects of the challenge?
What questions does your inner consultant want to ask you?
Write down all your thoughts and associations. You can even map them out into a fact map.
By mapping it out you will start seeing interconnections that are not obvious from the start.
Pay attention to internal feelings whether things need to be in different order, or something is missing, or not connected, or conflicting.
Look for the unusual.
You will also find that this technique helps you to stop endless mind chat.
If you need to reset your brain, empty it from annoying and repetitive thoughts - simply dump them all on paper. Inspect them and categorise. It will teach you a lot about yourself.
This is a way to narrow your focus only to the task at hand.
It’s useful to come back to those notes at a later stage and see if there are any repetitive themes.
Do not ignore it. Those things and thoughts are there because they speak to something important to you.
By addressing it you will stop draining your valuable energy on empty thoughts not leading to any outcome.
How do you know if you’ve got it right?
You will know it when a clear way forward emerges. You will have a clear idea of the next step you can make to resolve the issue which wasn’t there before.
