Framework for career planning in the uncertain times

For many people, a crisis becomes a cause that forces them to rethink their future. However, it’s a different story when you build strategies to move forward intentionally, rather under pressure of circumstances that dis-empower you.

Whatever is your situation that drives you to recalculate your career: whether it’s volatility at work, or hitting a ceiling in the career growth causing you to feel stuck and frustrated, whether it’s a return from a maternity leave or you are looking to redefine yourself and your identity in life and business… or maybe it’s even bigger question for you - it’s a question of your calling in its broadest sense – a way of living and being, in which career is an inherent component through which you realise your potential , the purpose of your life, it’s your soul’s work and evolutionary journey…whatever it is, it’s useful to have a road map, a framework and system that will support you every time you want to transition to the next level.

Every single one of us is asking the same questions “What’s next? How do I stay relevant to the future? How do I leverage my skills and knowledge to transition or pivot into the next level of my career and life?”

To help myself and you, I created a framework that aims to take you step-by-step to answer these questions.

1. Start by uncovering your true needs and values

Why does it matter? Because your subconscious needs, manifested by the values, are your true compass and real motivation behind your every step.

The tricky part here is to uncover your true needs which are deeply rooted in your subconscious mind and control which of your plans get energy or do not. All my coaching clients unanimously agree that this is one of the most valuable parts of their coaching experience and growth journey. Failure to do so will set you up for inner conflict and self-sabotage.

Aligning your choices and actions with your values, otherwise, ensures you secure support from your subconscious mind and thus tap into its endless energy resources, ensuring you have energy not only to dream of achieving the final goal, but also – for the journey.

Quoting one of my clients “the biggest value I’ve got from our work together was a new perspective on my values, priorities and how they are linked to future career choices. It opened my eyes to the range of possibilities I didn’t realise existed before”.

You will know that you are aligned and connected to your subconscious needs and values, when you have a feeling as if you are plugged into a power socket, as if all puzzles clicked in place. This will ensure you have enough energy to take yourself on a journey of change.

2. Define your vision

Greatest visionaries of the past and our time recognise that creating a vision is something you need to skill and discipline yourself for. Jeff Basos once said that his current good quarter has probably been done for a couple of years now, and now, he is thinking of the quarter in 5 years’ time.

There is no doubt that 1% of success is based on your vision and 99% on daily effort. But what’s interesting is that all your efforts are fueled by that 1% foundation. Actions without a vision is a nightmare and vision without action is a daydream.

In my practice I work a lot with high-achieving women. They are extremely talented, intelligent and driven. Their mind-created visions are packed with loads of “new mountains to climb”. However, it usually goes hand in hand with overwhelm bordering burnout.

To achieve a sense of balance, I recommend grounding your vision by discerning what is really indispensable in it, without which you will never truly feel happy and alive. Participants of our programs report that this brings massive insights into what is essential in their vision, gives a sense of clarity and laser focus to cut out noise.

3. Yeahbuts and Saboteurs

Now that you have defined your vision, work through all your “Yeah-Buts” and ways you sabotage yourself.

The self-sabotaging programs often emerge as a non-constructive way to address your primary motivations. Usually, these saboteur programs are subconscious and formed in childhood years. It’s important to recognise that they served you at some point, however, do not help you any longer. They just require different strategies to satisfy primary needs behind them.

It’s important to note that not all problems and obstacles are made equal. You can’t fight gravity, so you can’t fight some limiting circumstances. You will save yourself a lot of time and effort by separating “gravity” problems from others. Former needs acceptance and the latter should be reframed to enable constructive actions.

4. Frame your wildly important goals

You are now ready to frame your goals based on your vision as well as obstacles. As the authors of “The 4 Disciplines of Execution” define it “the more you try to do the less you actually accomplish. The execution should be aimed at a small number of ‘wildly important goals’. This simplicity will help focus your energy to a sufficient intensity to ignite real results. Then it’s essential to bridge your dreams to reality by devising a plan on how to tackle real-life obstacles rather than closing your eyes on them.

5. Examine Skills & Strengths: existing and aspirational

Your existing experience and skills and the gap to aspirations also will contribute to setting goals and fulfilling them. They serve as your resources and enablers.

To find your flow, ask yourself “When are you energised the most? Which of your strengths stand behind those activities? When do you feel you work in your own element?”

If you are not enjoying your work, one of the reasons might be that you are not exercising your natural talents. One can’t teach a fish to climb a tree.

6. Consolidate all findings into minimal but wildly important action career growth plan

At the end, you will be able to design a minimum actionable plan to start implementing on your terms. The amount of resources you have (energy, time, support, knowledge, money…) will determine how fast you will go. But you are able to improve your current position already by focusing on a Minimum Actionable plan.

As with any journey, this one has its own pitfalls.

To name a few, you may be confronted by:

- lack of clarity

- unresolved internal conflicts

- so called “blind sports” when it comes to recognising links and triggers of one's own behaviour and its correlation to the results,

- limitations of one's own perception defined by education and experience

- energy drains and inability to find alternative strategies of satisfying your psychological, emotional, intellectual, physical and social needs

- inner constraints imposed on self and embedded in own self-image

- and many more.

I love trekking and when I went to Tibet and Peru, I couldn’t imagine doing so without a guide. Career recalculation is no different. Having a pathfinder on your side saves a lot of time, effort and energy, ensuring you arrive at your destination.

All people I worked with unanimously recognised the benefit of applying a systemic and supported approach, whilst many even shared a regret that they wished to learn this earlier in life. You are your own biggest asset that you will have for life and it makes a difference to learn to work with yourself in that way.

If you would like to go deeper and really commit to advancing your life and career, and do it all in a supportive and fun environment, welcome to our program “Re-Envision. Re-Calculate. Create your next career path”.
